Hello smiley people! August is #HappinessHappens month, celebrating all those little moments of happiness that pop up unexpectedly during our daily lives!
Here at Smiley we believe that every day should be full of happiness, and that a good day usually starts with a good morning! With that in mind, we’ve scoured the interwebs for top tips on shaking off those early morning cobwebs and hitting the ground running the Smiley way – try them for a week and let us know if you feel any different! 🙂
‘Three little birds’ of happiness
Each morning, set aside a few minutes out of your schedule to write down three things that you are grateful for today. It can be anything from the weather that morning, to the love of a family member, or even just that you had a particularly good cup of coffee! If you can keep this simple routine up for a month then it will become a habit and you will find yourself feeling much more positive and optimistic in the long term. Positivity leads to better social interactions and has even been shown to increase productivity and success in the workplace. So, practice the simple power of happiness at work!
One happy ‘moment in time’
Spend a couple of minutes each morning writing about one happy thing that happened to you the day before. This helps to re-live the moment in your own mind, reinforcing the experience and banking that juicy positivity! Some people like to keep their writing private in a diary or journal, while others prefer sharing their positive experiences on social media or on an online blog – there is no right or wrong way, just do whatever feels comfortable for you. Much like the task above, if you can keep this routine up for just one month you will begin to notice a change in your mindset, as your brain is re-wired to seek out happy experiences!
‘Twist and Shout’ for happiness
If you are anything like me then you were probably hoping to get through this blog without being told to exercise, but unfortunately for both of us exercise is a key part of getting yourself psyched up for the day ahead! It’s not all bad news though, just 15 mins of cardio activity can be enough to get those endorphins pumping. If you aren’t much of a runner, just power walking to the station instead of jumping on the bus is enough of a boost, or get creative with it – play hide and seek with your little ones, do some kick-ups in the garden, or even just dance around your living room to your favourite song! ^^
‘Smiley says relax’ and be happy
Get yourself settled into a nice comfy chair, and clear your mind of all your worries at thoughts of the upcoming day. Spend a couple of minutes focusing on your breathing, watching your chest rise and fall, and imagining that you can see the air moving in and out of your lungs. Count to three as you breathe in, then count to five as you slowly exhale. The length of time doesn’t matter too much, just make sure that you are breathing remains slow and steady, and you breathe out for longer than in.
‘Start a love train’ of happiness
Write a short letter, email, or message to someone, praising or thanking them for something nice they have done for you. This helps to grow and reinforce your social relationships in a positive way, as well as spreading happiness out into a wider circle of people that might just pay that positivity forward to others. If you are strapped for time even a simple text message can help spread the love. Start your own Smiley epidemic!
‘Don’t stop believing’ in happiness
The biggest issue facing people wanting to take steps to improve their outlook on life is that everything has to fit into an already crowded morning routine, but most of the simple activities above can be done while chowing down on your breakfast or sipping your morning coffee. It’s important to get your fix of endorphins and dopamine in the morning, and these activities are tailored to rewire your brain for positivity, and give you that boost to set you up for a happy day!
