We hope you have your dancing shoes on, this weekend it’s time to paint the town red for #InternationalDanceDay

International Dance Day was created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute, the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO. Since its creation in 1982, the day has grown to a global event, celebrated by brands and organisations all over the world.

Here at Smiley we have always had a relationship with dance music and youth culture, and obviously take special interest in a day that celebrates an awesome activity that promotes happiness and health through exercise and friendship!

Since the 80s and 90s Smiley’s bond to dance music has grown in strength, with Smiley featuring prominently on the artwork of the vinyl for legendary electronic band Bomb the Bass’s, and their global chart topping single ‘Beat Dis’. This track fuelled the explosion of the underground house music scene during the 1980’s and 90’s, where Smiley became the face of dance floors globally from London to Chicago.

Today Smiley continues to enjoy strong ties with the dance music world, partnering with Ibiza clubs Sankeys and their club night Dance 88/89 , which pays homage to 1980’s dance music culture. Smiley also continues to be a dance floor fashion favourite with DJ’s, clubbers and celebrities, including Felix Da Housecat, Jamie Jones, Skrillex & Solumun to name but a few.

Smiley has also made a prominent appearance at almost every major European music and dance festival over the last few years, with Glastonbury and the Isle of White festival being particularly well represented. In 2016 the main stage at Glasto was awash with Smiley flags and banners, thanks in part to the great work by the Smiley team handing out goodies and spreading happiness to the festival goers trapped in a bottleneck at Castle Cary. It’s just one example of how these ground-roots ties to festival audiences and music lovers are encouraged by Smiley to continue championing happiness within youth and music culture in the UK and beyond.
