Welcome to 2017 Smiley fans!
It’s a huge year for us here at Smiley, as it not only marks the 20th anniversary of our CEO Nicolas Loufrani creating the first digital Smileys, but also the 45th anniversary of our company founder Franklin Loufrani creating and trademarking our classic Smiley for the first time.
In 1971 the news was full of depressing stories, so young journalist Franklin Loufrani was tasked with creating a new way of highlighting good news by Pierre Lazaref, France’s most respected newspaper editor of the time. That Autumn, the hand-drawn illustration of Smiley was born, with its first publication in France Soir newspaper appearing on New Year’s Day in 1972. The promotion quickly gained traction amongst leading European newspapers, and Smiley soon started to expand its licensing program into a variety of innovative products and new categories.
The brand has evolved a lot over the past 45 years and The Smiley Company is today one of the TOP150 licensing Companies in the world, with over 230 licensees globally generating annual turnover at retail in excess of $200 million and selling more than 13 million products year round. The Smiley trademark is registered in over 100 countries and in more than 12 product categories and according to a recent Toluna survey has 97% recognition across the world as a symbol of positivity.
We have some amazing projects planned for our anniversary year which will be revealed in further detail over the coming months, including:
- Major promotions across global trade shows
- Stellar collaborations with some of the world’s most prestigious brands
- A global PR campaign
- Standout consumer facing promotions
- Social media campaigns
… so stay tuned for updates coming soon to a social feed near you! 😉
