Mother nature was providing the smiles this week, with the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii photographed displaying a huge Smiley face formed by lava!

The 6 mile, 20 meter wide lava flow then continued on from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent, flowing down the volcano’s Southern slopes all the way to the Pacific ocean (for the first time since 2013!) and producing spectacular scenes as the red-hot lava cascaded off cliffs into the waters below.

Kilauea volcano is one of the most active in the world and has been erupting for the past 33 years, but it’s the first time it’s decided to grace us with it’s winning smile! 😀

The high quality images were captured by Paradise Helicopters, a tour company offering unique trips around Hawaii – talk about being in the right place at the right time!

You can also check out an incredible video of the event via the BBC here.
