It's been 30 years since the Second Summer of Love, but the impact of the counterculture and its fashion creativity is still visible in streetwear across the world.
The Michiko Koshino X Smiley collab is the womenswear and menswear collection inspired by Summer of Love, created by the iconic fashion innovator. Michiko cemented her cult status in the early 90s, having established herself as one of the pivotal designers to emerge from the growing London club scene. Setting up shop in Soho in the late 80s, Michiko’s store was hidden away, which only added to the allure. The hub was reminiscent of club dance floors, which blended music with sportswear and earnt Michoko a loyal following.
Michiko’s early designs fused functionality and fashion; easy to dance in, her bomber jackets with multiple pockets meant clubbers could forgo their bags at raves with a ‘no bag’ policy. The now infamous inflatable rain jacket poked fun at the duvet jackets worn by B-boys, but quickly became a nightlife staple.
The Smiley collab continues to draw on the playful witty designs that Michiko championed. The range includes T-shirts, sweatshirts, bomber and denim jackets, caps, hats, socks and tote bags - a uniform for all those seeking to dance, be unified and celebrate life.
